Bali, often called the land of karma, is a welcoming sanctuary where travellers quickly feel at home, thanks to the island’s unique energy and the warmth of its locals.
Having been hosting retreats in Bali for over 5 years, we often get questions about what life on the island is really like.
Today, we’re excited to share our practical Bali travel tips to enhance your experience if you’re planning on visiting the island in 2024.
Do: Honour the rich culture and traditions of Bali. Honour local customs, art, and wisdom during rituals and ceremonies. It’s a beautiful way to connect with the heart of the island.
Don’t: Disrupt sacred ceremonies or rituals for the sake of a photograph. Remember that these traditions hold deep significance for the local community, and observing them with respect will enhance your cultural understanding.
Do: Stroll through Bali’s lush rice fields, admire majestic waterfalls, and telax pristine beaches. Contribute to the island’s sustainability by practising responsible, conscious tourism – leave no trace, respect the animals, and support eco-friendly initiatives.
Don’t: Neglect the environmental impact of your actions. Bali faces a trash problem, so be mindful. If you see trash on the beach, do a friendly gesture and pick it up. Small actions can make a big difference.
Do: Connect with the locals by learning a few phrases in Bahasa Indonesia. Simple phrases like “Selamat pagi” (good morning) and “Terima kasih” (thank you) go a long way. The locals will appreciate your effort and it will get you a big smile!
Don’t: Forget to interact with the locals. The heart of Bali lies in its people! Engage with the locals; their kindness and warmth define the true essence of this island.
Do: When shopping at local markets for tourist goods, negotiate (respectfully). It’s part of the local culture, and market owners expect it. A friendly haggle can lead to meaningful interactions and unique finds.
Don’t: Bargain excessively or disrespectfully. Recognise the value of the items you’re purchasing and the livelihood of the local vendors. Keep it fair and friendly.
Do: Prioritise your peace of mind by investing in travel insurance. This will not only allow you to fully immerse yourself in the travel experience but also ensures that, in the unlikely event something happens, you’ll receive top-notch care and support.
Don’t: Skip the crucial step of doing your research when booking accommodations. Keep in mind that sometimes, the pictures posted online may not represent reality. It’s always good to delve into accommodation reviews before making reservations, so you can choose wisely, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable holiday that aligns with your preferences and expectations.
Do: ALWAYS wear a helmet if you’re on a scooter. Your safety is important, whether you’re renting your own moped or using a scooter taxi.
Don’t: Don’t drink tap water or brush your teeth with it to dodge Bali Belly. Stay hydrated with bottled or filtered water to keep your adventure stomachache-free.
Do: Research the visa requirements for your country before arriving in Bali. For most countries, you can get a Visa On Arrival when you arrive at the Bali airport, which is a straightforward process. However, it’s important to double-check your country’s eligibility before you start your journey.
Don’t: Overstay. It can lead to unnecessary complications and fines. Make sure you’re informed about how long you can stay with your visa and comply with the rules.
